Industrial Symbiosis Haugaland has been on a study trip to Bergen for inspiration and professional replenishment.
The day started with experience sharing and case assignments led by Nils Tore Skogland with colleagues at Mutual, followed by a more academic approach from Grete Rusten, professor of geographic economics at the University of Bergen. The sessions covered strategic topics such as methodology to avoid missteps in symbiotic cooperation, as well as how to ensure that the links between the actors do not just move problems - but actually solve them.
Then the trip went to BOR, where the project participants got an insight into Voss Biopark. Hogne Overaa and Ulrikke Voltersvik Hernæs shared their experiences with solutions for waste management and how they approach regional challenges. Although the project is in many ways different from Industriell Symbiosis Haugalandet, it became clear that many of the obstacles are the same.
Symbioses in action
After looking at professional, experience-based and scientific perspectives, it was time to see collaboration in practice.
BOB Gjenvinning and Eviny Termo in Rådalen showed us how cooperation can maximize resource utilization. BIR's incineration plant produces energy from waste, while Eviny Termo utilizes the waste heat to supply district heating. This is a good example of how cooperation and coordination can provide environmentally friendly energy solutions.
All in all a very inspiring and useful trip. Now we look forward to translating the inspiration into action in our work at Haugalandet!
