The agreement enables Rennesøy-based Green Mountain to realize its plans for data center development at Gismarvik. The company has big growth ambitions and Gismarvik is one of the areas they have long considered for data center development. Previously, the stumbling block has been the availability of electricity, but with Statnett's planned 500MW transformer station in the park, this challenge will be solved within 4-5 years.
Increased power supply enables construction to start next year
- However, we can start the first phase of construction as early as 2022 given the current power situation. We have several international companies that are interested," says Tor Kristian Gyland, CEO of Green Mountain.
The growing demand for data storage and, in particular, the interest from international players means that Green Mountain is constantly looking at new areas for further development. Norway's value proposition of renewable energy, low electricity prices, stable framework conditions and good fiber access resonates well with international companies.
- With the NO-UK cable soon to be realized, this value proposition is further strengthened on the fiber side. "We also see great opportunities to collaborate with other types of industry that will be established in the area. Collaboration where the residual heat from the data center can be reused in circular projects is particularly relevant," says Gyland.
The business park invests in data centers
Tiril Fjeld, general manager of the park, sees great potential in establishing new green industries in the area.
- This is fully in line with the ambitions of Haugaland Business Park, and with the infrastructure we have in place, the expertise available on Haugalandet, and ample access to clean energy, we will be a good location for a data center of this type. We welcome Green Mountain and look forward to the further process," says Fjeld.
About Green Mountain
Green Mountain designs, builds and operates highly secure, innovative and sustainable data centers for co-location in Norway. The data centers operate with 100% renewable electricity and use innovative cooling solutions and the Norwegian climate makes them highly energy efficient.
The data center near Stavanger (DC1-Stavanger) is built deep inside a mountain in a former high-security NATO ammunition depot. The data center in Telemark (DC2-Telemark) is located in the "cradle of hydropower" in Norway with proximity to several local hydropower plants. The new data center at Enebakk (DC3-Oslo) is located just outside Oslo, the capital of Norway.
Green Mountain is one of the largest data center operators in the Nordic region, and is experiencing strong growth. Among its customers are major international customers in Cloud, Banking/Finance, HPC, Automotive and more.
